What is black-hat search engine optimisation?

What is black-hat search engine optimisation?
by Elissa Sanderstrom
Black-hat search engine optimisation is a group of SEO methods which are commonly discussed by people in the profession as some use them while others don't. Black-hat SEO methods are seen by many to be unethical in the way they produce results but despite this they are sometimes effective and so can't be ignored as a type of search engine optimisation. The reason these methods come under criticism is not just because they are unethical but also because many of them break search engine rules.
Popular SEO method's first priority is to provide a good user experience before providing SEO benefits. Black-hat SEO methods don't work in this way and their main intention is to have a significant impact on SEO even if the user experience for the visitors is very poor. This could be down to poor content or link or keyword cramming where the keywords and links are there just for SEO purposes and make little or no sense in the context of the content.
The way which content is displayed is also a part of search engine optimisation and black-hat SEO also takes this for granted as the content once again comes second to SEO results. It isn't uncommon on black-hat optimised sites to find lists of keywords or a high number of links. For those more aware of black-hat methods it is sometimes possible to find lists of keywords which have been made the same colour as the background so that they are only visible to search engines.
Many black-hat SEO methods were actually once completely accepted by everyone in the SEO industry but professionals used them reasonably and in moderation. The reason they became frowned upon by many is because some began to exploit them and use them excessively.
While some of the methods do provide results, most of them only do so very minimally or for a limited amount of time before they are discovered by search engines. Websites which are found using such methods are also likely to face a penalty which will probably see their position in results drop more than the black-hat SEO initially helped them climb.
